What is wrong with that babbling Greek?
1. Socrates is an amateur
2. Socrates is irresponsible
3. Socrates is a chatter-box
4. Socrates is psychologically naïve
5. Socrates denies that pain matters
6. Socrates is anti-political
7. Socrates is parochial
8. Socrates is arrogant
9. Socrates is superstitious
10. Socrates is a rationalist
That's what's wrong with him!
This is a very nice little article for philosophy phans who feel a bit revisionist about the great antiquarians. Surprisingly enough, his contemporaries found Socrates seriously annoying too.
At his trial for corrupting Athenian youth with his anti-democratic teachings, more jurors sentenced him to death than initially found him guilty - meaning that even jurors who believed he was innocent still voted for the death penalty.
Not only does that confirm what a very annoying person Socrates may have been, but it also seriously supports his reservations about democracy in action.
And yet, even if the above list is true, I would view many of those Socrates vices as his virtues. Which probably explains why he is still with us, like that other moral philosopher (the Nazarene) who also left no writings of his own, and who preached against materialism, annoyed the establishment, and was condemned to death unjustly by a democratic mob.

ET and the Doctor Universalis
This article from the University of Navarre site is a challenging but fascinating read.
I make no apologies, since many of you Stumblers list philosophy and science as interests, and I'm calling your bluff.
Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225 to 1274) was an Italian Roman Catholic priest in the Dominican Order, who became the greatest philosopher and theologian in the scholastic tradition.
He was the foremost classical proponent of natural theology, and the father of the Thomist school of philosophy.
Quote: "Although Aquinas was unable to approach the question of the existence of intelligent extra-terrestrial life from the scientific perspective of our day, he does raise some overlooked philosophical questions regarding the status of such beings."
His reflections are helpful for addressing the frequently voiced claim that the discovery of intelligent extraterrestrial life would spell the end of religion, which is by its nature earth-centered. (As a 13th century Catholic, he was of course only concerned with the impact on Christianity).
Aquinas's position is that it is possible that ETs of a certain sort exist, but improbable that they do - a position not remote from that of modern scientific skeptics.
This article begins by considering Aquinas's philosophical positions on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, and then follows his theological views on the proposition. It closes with his arguments regarding the probability of extraterrestrial life.

A luminous and thought-provoking selection that just glows, like its images, with the intelligence of the surfer. Look no further for Intelligent Design that has a purposeful subtext in its choices. Love it.
